I LOVE Doughnuts

If there’s one takeaway from The Oregonian/OregonLive’s manically comprehensive, overly ambitious taste test of old-school Portland doughnut shops, it’s this:

Don’t believe the hype.

How do we know? Because last month, we set out to definitively answer a question that’s never been answered before: What is Portland’s best doughnut shop?

On a bright day in May, our team spread out across the metro area, buying doughnuts from every classic doughnut shop we could find, carrying them back to the office and tasting them blind.

For consistency, we looked for places that offered three classic styles: fritters, raised glazeds and old-fashioneds. For variety’s sake, we bought our old-fashioned doughnuts with chocolate frosting. We bent the rules a bit to include Krispy Kreme and Blue Star, both of which make their old-fashioned-ish doughnuts with chocolate dough. With one notable exception (Blue Star again), the fruit in our fritters was apple. We picked out the prettiest doughnut at each shop to help with our visual tie-breaker.

(Places that specialize in nontraditional sizes or shapes, including everyone’s favorite mini doughnut shop Pip’s, are featured in a sidebar.)

This was a really fun article for me to read since it was on one of my favorite foods or should i say favorite “desserts” which are doughnuts. I love doughnuts and I am always looking for the best places to go to get them. This article, being about that exact topic ( best doughnut shops around ) of course, as expected…i was very eager to read on. I will say that i was not as thrilled as i could be regarding the location of Portland, OR considering that i myself am a current resident of Baltimore, Md right now, however, if i do find myself visiting OR, this info will be sure to come in quite handy. I enjoyed reading about all the different types of doughnuts that the team of judges decided to taste test for the results. The team of judges picked 3 catergories and one of which held my fave type of doughnut the fritter. I was excited to find that they also picked some of my favorite flavors as well. The fritters had to be apple and the old fashioned style that were chosen had to be with only chocolate frostings. I definitely have a sweet spot for chocolate. So, overall i thought this was a fun article and i had alot in common with it. As i was reading more of this article, i found myself becoming envious of the work required of the team in order to acquire the proper data so that they could inevitably name the no. 1 doughnut shop in Portland. I also thought the photos provided were really cool. Some of the doughnuts looked a little weird to me. I am sure they were probably delicious but some of those old fashioned looked a strange shape, not like the usual perfectly rounded glazed. I also thought the idea of adding any doughnut that they thought looked pretty to the taste testing menu was cool. So really there were 4 types of doughnuts chosen altogether. I read through the list of winners and took notes. Overall, in my opinion this was a very delightful and informative article to read. Just make sure you do not read it on an empty stomach as once i was finished reading and writing , i am off to my favorite local shop. See ya

The City of Roses, Indeed!

Founded in 1917, The International Rose Test Garden is an unsung hero of the top places to visit in Portland. This special rose garden was created to save and protect European rose species from the ravages of war. June is the loveliest time of year to visit and stroll among the 7,000+ rose bushes. One of the nicest things about this site is that is free to the public. It would make a pleasant excursion for all ages. Perhaps a multi-generational outing to play a game of who can identify the most roses in an hour? On a clear day you can even see Mt. Hood from the upper area of the garden. The Rose Test Garden if located just opposite to the Japanese Garden so you can visit that as well. Enjoy!
